The penalty for sin is to be punished by death at the hand of God (i.e. Divine justice for idolatry) or to suffer the consequence of the results of the sin committed (i.e. drug overdose). It is because of God’s great love for us that He had provided the means to save us from the results of disobedience. When we accept Christ substitutionary death for our sins, we are acknowledging God’s love and when we confess our guilt we acknowledge that our way would only end in death.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
